Professor Howard Branley is a Consultant Physician in Respiratory Medicine with over 25 years of experience as a chest specialist.
Professor Branley has extensive training in respiratory medicine, including: asthma & allergy; lung cancer; TB and infection; pulmonary embolism (PE); interstitial lung disease (e.g. sarcoidosis and lung fibrosis); non-invasive ventilation; HIV & lung; cystic fibrosis; sleep medicine; occupational lung disease (occupational asthma, extrinsic allergic alveolitis and asbestos pleuro-pulmonary disease); pleural disease (e.g. pneumothorax, pleural effusion); and aviation medicine. He is proficient at fibre-optic bronchoscopy, bronchial washing, bronchoalveolar lavage, endobronchial biopsy, transbronchial biopsy and brush biopsy. Professor Branley has a special interest in aviation respiratory physiology and fitness to fly assessment.
Professor Branley graduated from the University of Liverpool (MBChB) with postgraduate education (MSc and MD) at the National Heart & Lung Institute, Imperial College London. He trained in Respiratory Medicine at St Mary’s, The Hammersmith, Royal Brompton, and Charing Cross Hospitals.
Professor Branley also speaks Spanish alongside his native English.
General (Internal) Medicine
Professor Branley has a very wide experience of general medical problems and emergencies. He is confident in dealing with the usual general medical case-mix that presents to a typical district general hospital A+E department.
Aviation Medicine
Professor Branley has a special interest in aviation respiratory physiology and fitness to fly assessment. In 1997 he had a 2-week secondment to the Royal Air Force School of Aviation Medicine, during which time he passed the Certificate in General Aviation Medicine. He was appointed as CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) Consultant in Respiratory Medicine 2013, assessing aviation professionals (pilots & air traffic controllers). He is Consultant in Respiratory Medicine for the London Aeromedical Centre (Centreline, W1) and the Heathrow Aeromedical Centre. He has been a member of the Royal Aeronautical Society for many years and was elected as a Fellow (FRAeS) in 2013 for services to aviation medicine.
Professor Branley is a regular lecturer on the King’s College London Aviation Medicine courses (both basic and advanced). He was an invited lecturer at the Royal Aeronautical Society Conference on ‘Medical Risk in Aviation’ (Respiratory Medicine), London, December 2017.
