I combine a thriving practice treating cataracts and complex glaucoma with a successful academic career.
Last year I published the results of a major trial of laser trabeculoplasty in the Lancet (the LiGHT study – glaucoma treatment without daily medication), that is transforming glaucoma care across the world.
Professor Gus Gazzard is a London-based Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon and leading researcher in eye care. {{ label }}
His primary areas of expertise are cataracts, glaucoma and the medical, laser and surgical treatment of glaucoma (including complex cataract surgery). He trained at Cambridge University and UCL, joining Moorfields Eye Hospital in 2005 after a Research Fellowship in Singapore, where he ran clinical trials of glaucoma surgery.
He is Chief Investigator of the 6 year £2m multi-centre LiGHT trial of SLT in the UK and the sister trial in China.
He is currently training surgeons in the use of the iStent, Xen, InnFocus and Hydrus shunts and is the Director of the Glaucoma Service at Moorfields Eye Hospital.
I have been leading the restructuring of the Moorfields Eye Hospital Glaucoma Service (with over 69,000 patients) to cope with the COVID crisis. I have been awarded two COVID-specific research grants to investigate COIVD-recovery related topics.
My career highlights include publishing the Lancet paper of LiGHT Trial findings, being promoted to a UCL full Professor in 2019 and being made Director of Moorfields Glaucoma Service, 2018.

Some of the state-of-the-art tech I’ve used includes: hydrus glaucoma stents, preserflo microshunts, iStents, GATT and AbIC.
I have published over 150 papers and several book chapters.
