Professor Maria Kyrgiou is a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at King Edward VII's Hospital. Ms Kyrgiou has expertise in general gynaecology, minimal access surgery and gynaecology oncology. Alongside her work at King Edward VII's Hospital, Professor Kyrgiou is an associate professor at Imperial College London. {{ label }}
Professor Maria Kyrgiou (MSc PhD MRCOG) completed a MSc (masters of science) in advanced gynaecological endoscopy at the University of Surrey, before completing a doctorate thesis in ovarian cancer chemotherapy. Professor Kyrgiou is recognised nationally and internationally for her research. She has been published in scientific journals and contributes to national and international committees.
She has trained in obstetrics and gynaecology and subsequently specialised in advanced minimal access surgery (laparoscopy and hysteroscopy) for complex benign disease and gynaecologic oncology at the West London Gynaecological Cancer Centre at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.
Professor Kyrgiou is a keen researcher and educator. The primary focus of her research is translational research in gynaecological diseases and cancers. In particular, she focuses on cervical, endometrial and ovarian cancer with an emphasis on prevention and personalised treatment.
She has an interest in cervical pre-invasive and invasive disease, primary cervical screening and HPV vaccines. She has led research into the impact of treatment for cervical pre-invasive and early invasive cervical disease on reproductive outcomes and the clinical use of HPV biomarkers in personalising the management of women with abnormal findings at primary population-based screening. Alongside this, Professor Kyrgiou also runs a research group investigating the impact of obesity and metabolic disorders in the development of gynaecological cancers with an emphasis on endometrial cancer.
She further investigates the role of the genital tract and gut microbiome and host interactions in the development and treatment response of gynaecological cancers.
